TWO VERY DIFFERENT HALVESFrom the start, the match had two different halves. For me, the goals were not unavoidable situations. I think they were situations that we could have handled better. We will analyse them, review them and correct them. I am convinced that when you play against a side like Atlético de Madrid, any mistake, even a small one, can cost you dearly, and if they go ahead, they are opponents who concede few goals and are tough. In the second half we made a change, so Pepelu came off and Hugo Duro replaced him, we changed the formation and the team was more aggressive. The team tried at all times and I think that in those first 20 minutes of the second half a goal from us would have completely changed the game and our chances, but we didn't convert it - and the dubious decisions on fouls or not fouls, whether they were in the area or not in the area, didn't go our way. I see the third goal as anecdotal and in terms of the approach or the players who started, we opted for those who we thought would help us to be more competitive.
THE POSSIBLE PENALTY
With actions like the penalty appeal, there are times after a defeat that I don't want to see or look at them. I understand that there is a regulation, that there is an interpretation of the action; there was contact with the player's arm, that is clear. I don't know if the fact that the arm was by his side or extended determines this. But anyway, it is an action that Simeone has said was a penalty, so I prefer to think that it wasn't than to think that it was. It hurts less to think that it wasn't a penalty than to think that it was, because I'm convinced that at that moment in the game a penalty or a goal from us would have completely changed the dynamic.
I can evaluate Canos' situation in the same way that I can evaluate Diakhaby's situation, or any player who didn't come on today.CONTROVERSIAL INCIDENTSThere is VAR that can look closely at the action. there is a referee who has it much more difficult to evaluate live, but VAR is there to correct any error and give the decision correctly. You have to believe that it was not a penalty. I think it is healthier to think that it was not, than to think that it was and it was not given.
COMPETING AGAINST ATLETICO MADRID
I see in the dressing room that the team are hurt. At half time the team were hurting and that frustration was proportional to the fact that the team believe in themselves and believe in the possibilities that we have, regardless of the opponents we face. You are playing against a side that are competing for the league title, the Copa del Rey and the Champions League, which speaks of the stature and level of the opponents, but the team are committed enough to work very hard during the week and to think about our chances in each game. That is why we were hurt today.
LOOKING FOR ANSWERS
What are we missing? We need to keep improving, keep growing, keep looking for answers to situations that top-level teams are capable of taking advantage of, and the more answers we have, the more options we have to compete against any team. I'll take away how we did in the second half, the team's reaction in the second half, and I'll also stick with the analysis I have to make of the first half, as to why we weren't able to defend better against Atletico Madrid.
I didn't see a lack of aggression, I saw that Griezmann's positions receiving the ball, dropping back to receive, did us a lot of damage. In the second half we put two forwards in so that there wasn't so much space next to the striker. It's time for me to review, analyse and improve the strategy, the approach and the responses that we had in the first half, and continue to encourage the reaction and the personality that the team showed in the second half.
IVÁN JAIME
He has a chance to be a starter, like any other player, as I said before the match. Any player who goes out on the pitch and performs has a chance to get more minutes. I have seen very positive aspects in his game and he is in the same dynamic as the rest of his teammates.
SADIQ
For me, Sadiq made good contributions to the team's attacking play in the first half. He made good contributions to the offensive and defensive play in the second half and I think that as a team we weren't able to stay tight. I saw the commitment to do so though. Sadiq competed, made his presence felt in the first half, and had offensive and defensive contributions in the second half..
FITNESS
All the players finished the match in good condition. We took off Iván Jaime due to muscle fatigue, and Enzo due to tiredness. Diego López was not in the starting eleven because we thought that Iván Jaime on the left could help us build attacks and we played with a double pivot, with Javi Guerra on the right. It was a question of approach, and the fact that it was the last change is because we saw that we needed more to finish with two forwards. We needed a player on the left who could go inside, like Iván Jaime at the beginning and then Almeida, until we moved him to central midfield. And on the right wing we need the option of putting in quick crosses and Fran Pérez is good in one-on-ones and crosses after dribbling. Rioja is a player who, with his weaker foot, could also help us to get crosses into the area. We brought on Diego so that a third striker could come in more from the left in the final stages of the match.
DIFFERENT FORMATIONS
For me, the team have to be able to play with both formations. The five-man back line that we are using is not a pure five-man line, because it is made up of a right winger and a right full-back. That allows it to be transformed, but after this result it is difficult for me to talk about tactical aspects, because I feel the disappointment that the fans may have, and I feel more that pain rather than any tactical aspect.
We started with five at the back, then we went to four. Today I liked the team better with four. It is also true that Atletico Madrid were already winning 0-2 when we made the change. These changes are sometimes opportunistic changes due to the context of the game we are in. Atletico Madrid are a team that are not very recognisable in terms of offensive structure and it was difficult to know with which defence we could be solid and aggressive at the same time. We opted for the one that we thought would allow us to reach half-time with a better result than we did.
We competed better in the second half with a line of four, trying to be aggressive, than in the first half, but the opponents made changes at that time, too. Our job is to analyse the initial approach of the first half, what worked, what didn't work, what we have to improve, and see in the second half, what worked, what didn't, what we have to insist on, and from there, be better. The dressing room believes, and that belief frustrates you more -because before a match you believe in the chances you have.
