The Chairboys' manager had been linked with the job at the CBS Arena, but the Chelsea legend is now closing in on the role.

Wycombe Wanderers have been superb in 2024/25 and few would have predicted that they would be leading the way in League One at this point in the season, considering the strength of some of the other sides in the division.

The Chairboys are currently two points clear of Birmingham City in the third tier and have now won their last six matches in the league, although Blues do have a game in hand.

Matt Bloomfield's management has helped his side become a real contender for promotion to the Championship, and his impressive start has seen him linked with the currently vacant job at Coventry City.

Mark Robins was sacked in controversial circumstances at the end of last week after his side were beaten by Derby County, and while there may have been fears at Adams Park that their boss could be leaving in the very near future, a recent update involving Frank Lampard has eased any potential Wycombe worries.

The sacking of Robins sent shockwaves through the EFL last Thursday, and the search for a new manager to replace a Coventry legend has been an extremely difficult one, even though it looks as though it is heading for a quick resolution.

Bloomfield was reported to be one of the leading contenders to take charge at the CBS Arena following his excellent start to the season with Wycombe, but despite his success so far in 2024/25, it seems as though Doug King has turned to Lampard to take the club back towards the top end of the Championship.

It is a move that may come as a surprise considering the struggles that the former Derby manager has had at Chelsea and Everton in his last two jobs in management, however, to the Chairboys faithful it is news that will only come as a positive.

Their last two League One campaigns saw them miss out narrowly on the play-offs in League One, but with Bloomfield now into his second full season as the Wycombe boss, he has quickly shown his prowess as a manager.

His team are playing some excellent football, and have put the likes of Stockport County to the sword recently, running out 5-0 winners against the Hatters at the start of November. With the news of Lampard closing in on the Coventry job, the added security can only be seen as a positive at Adams Park.

Wycombe could shock the rest of League One

Not many had foreseen Wycombe being a genuine title contender until the last few weeks, with the Buckinghamshire club quietly going about their business in League One, while Birmingham and Wrexham have got all the attention.

It has been this under-the-radar nature that has been a huge strength of Bloomfield's management, with the 40-year-old building an excellent squad filled with quality across the pitch without breaking the bank.

In the last five years, the Chairboys have become one of the top sides in the third tier, even winning promotion to the Championship in the 2019/20 campaign, and there is a similar feeling of excitement building at Adams Park this season.

Bloomfield has already started to prove his worth as a manager in League One, and there is no doubt that he will be in charge of a club in the second tier in the very near future, but for Wycombe supporters they will be hoping that is with them.
