Roma are going through a difficult time, and the situation at the Olimpico box office reflects the current discontent of the fans.
Despite the official data reporting a sold-out for the Europa League match against Dynamo Kiev, visible voids in the stands indicate the growing disinterest and discomfort of many supporters.
The rain and the afternoon time certainly had an impact, but they were not enough to explain the absence of thousands of season ticket holders, who probably preferred to desert in protest against a team that is struggling to convince.
The team, which appeared dull and ineffective in the Europa League despite the victory, was booed by the crowd throughout the match. Even coach Ivan Juric, usually well received, received some boos while reading the lineups, a symptom of the growing dissatisfaction of the fans.
Bryan Cristante and Lorenzo Pellegrini, two of the most representative players, were the main targets of criticism: a situation that, by now, seems to have become a habit.
From the Curva Sud, the hottest sector of the Giallorossi fans, a sign of truce arrived on Thursday, writes Corriere dello Sport.
Although in the recent matches against Udinese and Inter the fans had protested by leaving the sector empty for 15 minutes and, at times, displaying banners critical of the Friedkin ownership, in the match against Dinamo Kiev the protest was toned down.
No blatant demonstration took place as previously, when the banners openly criticized the ownership and the management of communication, defined as insufficient and distant from the values of the fans.
Despite the temporary truce, dissatisfaction with the American ownership remains tangible. In previous matches, the Curva Sud explicitly expressed their disappointment with slogans such as “15 minutes of absence because we are disgusted by this management” and criticism of the Friedkin management, guilty, in their opinion, of not having adequately responded to expectations.
Even during the Europa League match against Athletic Bilbao and at the beginning of Roma-Venezia, the fans adopted an attitude of silence and absence of chants, a clear signal of the desire to express dissent without resorting to sensational demonstrations.
For the next away match in Florence, on Sunday, the situation is different: 300 Giallorossi fans, the maximum allowed due to the renovation work at the Franchi, will follow the team, bringing their support even in this climate of tension. However, the enthusiasm seems contained, in line with a moment in which the bond between the team and the public seems to be cracking.
