On the latest episode of Media Matters on Anfield Index, Eddie Gibbs and Liverpool FC reporter David Lynch delved into the growing rumours linking the Darwin Nunez with a potential move to Saudi Arabia.
“There’s definitely interest there,” David Lynch confirmed when discussing reports that Saudi Pro League clubs have identified Núñez as a potential marquee signing. While no formal offers have been made, the links are persistent. Lynch explained, “The Saudi clubs have been very active in looking at Liverpool players recently,” pointing to past attempts to lure key names to the Gulf state.
Liverpool, however, remain resolute in their position. “It would take a substantial offer for Liverpool to even consider selling,” Lynch said, emphasising that Núñez is viewed as integral to Arne Slot’s plans moving forward. “They’re not in a position where they need to sell.”
The conversation naturally turned to Núñez’s on-pitch performances. “He divides opinion, doesn’t he?” Gibbs remarked, highlighting how fans remain split on the striker’s effectiveness despite his impressive goal return. Lynch agreed, suggesting that Núñez’s unpredictability can sometimes overshadow his contributions. “He has that chaos factor, but you can’t ignore the goals he’s scored this season.”
With Arne Slot now at the helm, Lynch believes the new manager’s tactical adjustments could unlock even more from the Uruguayan. “Slot likes his forwards to press intelligently and make those runs in behind,” Lynch explained. “Núñez, for all his rawness, fits that mould.”
The allure of Saudi Arabia isn’t just about football—it’s about financial incentives. Lynch noted that Saudi clubs are offering salaries that are hard to resist. “We’re talking about contracts that double or triple what players are earning here,” he said. For players from South America, where football is as much about family security as personal success, the financial pull can be compelling.
“But it’s not just about the money,” Lynch added. “The Saudi league is growing, and they’re investing heavily to improve the overall quality.” The question remains: would Núñez trade Anfield’s historic significance for the rising profile of Saudi football?
Despite the noise around Núñez’s future, Liverpool appear calm. “They’re planning with Núñez in mind,” Lynch stated unequivocally. He pointed out that while the club is aware of external interest, their transfer strategy doesn’t currently include letting the Uruguayan leave. “Slot sees him as a key part of the project,” Lynch concluded.
The summer transfer window will undoubtedly bring more speculation, but for now, Núñez remains a Liverpool player with a significant role to play. The Saudi interest might persist, but as Lynch aptly put it, “It would take a monumental offer to prise him away from Anfield.”
