The 25-year-old is on a run of one goal in 13 matches across all competitions, and missed a penalty in the shootout as Liverpool were knocked out of the Champions League on penalties by PSG.

Nunez was linked with a move to Saudi Arabia in January and that speculation will continue into the summer, while recent reports suggest there is also interest from Spain.

It remains to be seen whether Nunez’s long-term future is at Liverpool, but speaking while on international duty with Uruguay, the striker admitted he is “not performing as well” as the club need.

“I’m happy thinking about the national team, enjoying every minute with it,” Nunez told Ovacion.

“These are moments that one goes through in football, and as I said recently, I’m not someone who throws in the towel because they don’t play, but rather I’m going to keep working so I can play.

“I know I’m not performing as well as I should. It’s difficult because when you’re doing well, like when I came on against PSG, your confidence changes, with the idea of being able to break it in the next match. But then you get a slump.”

Nunez has found himself behind the likes of Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz in the pecking order under Arne Slot, with seven goals in 40 appearances for Liverpool this season.

Asked to explain his struggles for goals, the Uruguayan suggested luck has not been on his side.

“The ball doesn’t want to go in,” Nunez said.

"I'm strong in my head, since my family always supports me, and that's the important thing to keep working and bring joy to everyone.”
