Denis Law: David Beckham and Gary Neville messages among tributes to Manchester United legend

Former Man United and Scotland striker died at the age of 84

Tributes have poured in for Denis Law after the legendary Manchester United striker died at the age of 84.

In his 11 years at Old Trafford, Law scored 237 goals in 404 appearances, leaving him third on the list of the club’s all-time top scorers behind only Wayne Rooney and Bobby Charlton.

Law was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia in 2021, and on Friday evening a statement was released by United on behalf of the Law family.

It read: “It is with a heavy heart that we tell you our father Denis Law has sadly passed away.

“He fought a tough battle but finally he is now at peace. We would like to thank everyone who contributed to his wellbeing and care, past and much more recently.

“We know how much people supported and loved him and that love was always appreciated and made the difference. Thank you.”

Law was capped 55 times for Scotland and scored 30 goals, making him his country’s joint-top scorer along with Kenny Dalglish. He is the only Scottish player to have ever won the Ballon d’Or, having done so in 1964.

Following the news of Law’s death, the Scotland National Team account on X posted: “A true great. We will not see his likes again.”

Shirts, scarves and flowers have been put down outside Old Trafford, while United CEO Omar Barrada laid a wreath as he paid his respects on Saturday.

David Beckham and Gary Neville were among the former United players to pay tribute to Law, who was sold for a British record transfer fee three times in his career and won the First Division title twice while at Old Trafford.

Beckham posted on Instagram: "Tonight we lost a true gentleman of the game. Our heart goes out to Denis's family.

"Our hearts are heavy tonight. A legend on the field but the perfect gentleman off."

Neville said: “Rest in peace Denis.

"A great footballer and a great man. It’s a privilege and an honour to have spent time in your company. The King of the Stretford End."

Wayne Rooney wrote on X: "Legend. Thoughts with all Denis' family and friends."

Eric Cantona added: "Rest in peace Denis. You were one of those who helped me feel at home in Manchester United. Thank you my friend!"

Singer Rod Stewart posted a picture on Instagram of himself alongside Law, captioned: “Farewell my hero, rest in peace.”
