Southampton prodigies Tyler Dibling and Sam Amo-Ameyaw are among the brightest names in English football. But do you know if not for this incident, maybe Amo-Ameyaw would be the most sought-after talent?
Let's replay back to when the 2024/25 season was about to begin. With the new campaign about to kick off, Southampton promote two of their academy talents to the higher ranks.
A guess who are they? Yes, prodigy stars Tyler Dibling and Sam Amo-Ameyaw.
But, little did they know, their upcoming season will be starkly contrasting. While Dibling has become a teenage sensation now, Amo-Ameyaw hopes to impress the Saints during his Strasbourg spell.
Now, you may ask, two young talents, that too in the same position, so how did their paths differ? Well, it did on how they pounced on the opportunities they got.
Recently, speaking to the Daily Echo, Dibling recalled an anecdote that aptly explains the same.
So, being academy players, neither of them started against Newcastle on the opening day this season. Still, both of them had a few crunch minutes in the end.
Post-match, the duo was doing training drills as usual. Suddenly, Dibling excitedly opined: "We could get some starts here..."
Say it was Dibling's fortune or anything, the 18-year-old was picked above Amo-Ameyaw in the next game. On the other hand, his contemporary was limited to the U21s soon.
And man, the way Dibling expressed himself against Manchester United a month later, had it done. To top it off, a goal against Ipswich impressed everyone.
In his words: "Then I scored my goal afterwards and it's just like, football can change so quickly - both ways. It can go so badly and it can go so good."
Fast forward now, the prodigy has been Southampton's biggest positive of the season. But had it not been for an initial opportunity above Amo-Ameyaw, it could have been vastly different for him.
Still, what has been done with Amo-Ameyaw feels unjustified. Let's hope that no such other talent faces this in the future.
