Manchester United defender Diogo Dalot is adamant that achieving Champions League football through winning the Europa League is the least they can do for the fans.
The Red Devil’s 7-1 aggregate win over Athletic Bilbao sealed their spot in the Europa League final setting up a game against Tottenham with the winner of the match playing in the Champions League next season.
United have not been at their best this season as they currently sit 16th in the table having lost 17 times. The only team outside the bottom three to have lost more are their opponents Spurs.
The Portuguese full back believes that the Champions League is where the team need to be and achieving this would be the ‘least’ they could do.
“Winning the Europa League would mean less bad than the season actually is. Everybody knows this is not the standard for the club, nowhere near it.
“What we have been doing this season is not what this club deserves so I think it is the least we could do for the fans because the suffer as much as us
“We have one more opportunity to be in the Champions League and to win a major competition, that is where we want to be and if we have that opportunity we need to grab it.”
Tottenham have beaten Manchester United three times this season but the defender does not believe that the previous games will have any impact on the final.
“When you get to a final in a competition like this what you have done previously will not be important to the result.
“Two English teams are playing and it will be a very good game to watch I think. We are two big clubs so the aim is to be in the best position mentally and physically to win it.”
Dalot has been out since he suffered a muscle injury against Wolves at the end of April but he is still hoping that he can make an appearance in Bilbao.
“You can imagine how much I want to be back as soon as possible so I am really pushing myself to be back but we will see.”
