The Carabao Cup final ends 2–1 in favour of Newcastle in a magical night for the Geordies. However, it’s yet more desolation and disappointment for the Reds, bringing a miserable week to a close. Liverpool failed to threaten Newcastle for the vast majority of the match, leaving lots to be desired from the performance. This has been nothing short of a painful week for all the Reds around the world, but what exactly has been going wrong?

With the manager’s insistence on sticking with nearly identical starting XIs throughout the season, some fans began questioning this approach months ago. It’s no coincidence that the likes of Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister, and Ryan Gravenberch — all of whom have had outstanding seasons — now appear completely exhausted by March. Arne Slot’s lack of squad rotation throughout this season has simply cost Liverpool, as seen in recent performances. Adding to this, it’s evident that Diogo Jota and Luis Díaz are being overplayed — highlighting two key issues. First, given Federico Chiesa’s performance today, it’s clear these two shouldn’t be relied upon as heavily, as their displays have simply not been good enough. Second, Liverpool’s need for a squad revamp in the summer transfer window has never been more apparent. When Mohamed Salah struggles for form, the entire attack loses its spark — an issue that is now glaring, as Salah finds himself in a worrying slump.

Will Liverpool be in the market for a new left-back?

Overall, this week has been a harsh lesson for Liverpool, making it abundantly clear to fans worldwide that a squad revamp is urgently needed across multiple areas this summer. Liverpool fans will hope Arne Slot learns from his mistakes sooner rather than later, but the season is far from over. With the Reds sitting 12 points clear of Arsenal, the focus now shifts to securing the Premier League title — an achievement that would see Liverpool equal Manchester United’s historic league title count.
