As we get further into the season, all Chelsea fans are getting happier and happier with the form the team is in and how we are playing. The sacking of Pochettino last year did raise some eyebrows among fans, however, the overall impact that Maresca has had on the squad is great and impressive considering we hadn’t seen much progress under Poch.
Although it may seem rash to say, Chelsea are one of the best teams in the league this season and despite our fans not wanting to admit it, if we keep up this form, we could be in a title race come the end of the season. Although, the Boylesports football odds and even us, the fans, are refusing to believe we have a chance.
As we have stated, Enzo Maresca’s appointment was met with some controversy with the sacking of Poch being a confusing one as things seemed to be working near the end of the season.
But, it appears the board have made the correct decision as here we are talking about the chances of us winning the league this season. There are several reasons why the team as a whole is working and we are cautious about how much credit Enzo deserves.
Our squad is incredible and we have built it in such a rapid time with a lot of money spent on young players. It was clear that the first season where all of these players were going to work together would be a mess and it was. Poch got the tough task of trying to navigate this squad last season and when he finally found his final team that was working, he was sacked.
However, in full credit to Maresca, after the first two games with him we already noticed a clear playing style and we looked a lot better than we had under Poch. This is probably the reason why our season under Maresca has been so much better overall, we know what we are playing and for the most part, the squad stays the exact same.
This season’s title race has been different to past years as the best team in the league for the last 7 years have been in fairly poor form. The usual suspects, Manchester City, Liverpool and now Arsenal are all in the title race but only Liverpool seem to be performing well.
Man City have just ended their seven game losing run and in this time they lost four Premier League games in a row, one against Liverpool which put them 11 points behind. This felt like an open invitation for Arsenal to get closer to Liverpool and try to push City as far away as possible. However, this didn’t happen as Arsenal have been fairly poor too, leaving Liverpool lonely at the top with us sitting behind them.
Now, looking at it objectively, in twenty games, we will most likely be wrapping up a top four finish and we will all be happy with that. However, for right now, we are 7 points behind top of the league, 2 points ahead of Man City and joint on points with Arsenal. So why can’t we have some hope that we will be in a title race?
I think our chances of winning the league are very slim, but for right now we are better position form wise and league wise than two of the three teams that you would consider favourites, so as we get further into the league, we should back the team and have some slight faith in us winning the league for the first time in nearly a decade.
