Dutch football icon Ruud Gullit has on Monday sent a message the way of fellow countryman Frenkie de Jong, regarding his future.
The name of midfielder De Jong has of course long taken its place centre stage in the headlines in Catalunya’s capital.
This comes amid the understanding that, owing to a combination of struggles for form and the Dutchman’s refusal to sign a new contract, the Barcelona brass are open to parting with the former Ajax man.
And one individual of the opinion that such a path forward would be best for all parties is the aforementioned Ruud Gullit.
Speaking to Voetbal (as cited by Mundo Deportivo) after De Jong was left to watch on from the bench for the entirety of Barca’s Spanish Super Cup victory over Real Madrid, Gullit pointed towards Bayern Munich as an ideal landing spot for his compatriot:
“I hope he finds a solution. I hope a club that suits him approaches him so he can leave Barça. It’s time to look for something different. Which club would be perfect? Bayern would be perfect for Frenkie. It would be fantastic for them.”
Ex-midfielder Gullit continued:
“I would like De Jong to play again. He should not be sitting on the bench. He is 27 years old and is in his prime. He needs to change this situation now.”
