World champions Argentina extended their lead in the CONMEBOL World Cup qualifiers to eight points with a resounding 4-1 victory over archrivals Brazil on Tuesday. Despite missing Lionel Messi, the home side delivered a dominant performance, while Brazil, currently fifth in the standings, struggled to pose a threat. The two-time defending Copa América champions have now gone unbeaten against the Seleção since 2019.

Chelsea’s Enzo Fernández stole the show, earning Player of the Match honors with a goal and an assist. The vice-captain orchestrated Argentina’s midfield, dictating the tempo throughout. His impact was felt early, as he made a well-timed run to the far post in the 12th minute to convert a Nahuel Molina cross. Later, in the 37th minute, Fernández showcased his vision with a pinpoint first-time cross from 30 yards out, finding Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister at the edge of the six-yard box. Mac Allister timed his run to perfection, lifting a side-footed volley over Brazil’s onrushing goalkeeper, Bento.

Fernández was instrumental beyond his goal contributions. He created more chances and made more blocks than any other player on the pitch. Only two players completed more final-third passes than him, and no one had more successful tackles, he won 100% of his challenges. Additionally, he topped the match in accurate crosses, once again boasting a perfect success rate, and led all players in duels won.

It was yet another masterclass from the Argentine maestro. However, due to Chelsea’s struggles this season, many of his standout performances have gone under the radar. Fernández and Moisés Caicedo have been two of the Premier League’s most consistent midfielders this campaign. Up next for them is a crucial London derby against Tottenham Hotspur next Thursday.

Tuesday’s clash featured plenty of Premier League representation. Argentina’s lineup included Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martínez in goal and Tottenham Hotspur’s Cristian Romero in central defense, while Fernández partnered Mac Allister in midfield. Meanwhile, Brazil’s midfield trio featured Wolves’ André, Newcastle United’s Joelinton, and Matheus Cunha, who played in the No. 10 role. Cunha went on to score Brazil’s only goal of the match.
