Enzo Maresca gives injury update on 3 players who would start tomorrow if fit

Chelsea play Manchester City tomorrow, and there was a lot of interest in Enzo Maresca’s press conference this morning.

The reason for that is what happened a week ago – the manager came into his presser and revealed multiple players had missed training sessions due to injury.

Today he gave an update on a few of them and their chances of playing tomorrow.

At the back, Levi Colwill has played every game when available this season, but he missed out against Wolves on Monday night. Matt Law of the Daily Telegraph said yesterday that he thought the centre back would return tomorrow, and Maresca seemed to confirmed that today:

“Probably Levi and Enzo could be available, it depends on today’s session. Romeo will be out.”

So we have some stability back in defence, but our midfield still is depleted. Enzo Fernandez should be ready, but Romeo Lavia won’t be, and that means we effectively have Moises Caicedo and a half fit Enzo as our only fit midfield options.

That’s just not good enough in terms of squad planning. So many attacking midfielders were brought in in the summer, while both solid number 6 options Andrey Santos and Lesley Ugochukwu were allowed to go on loan.

Now we’ve got too many attacking players getting unhappy because of a lack of playing time, while we are crying out for another player who can be used in the pivot.

Lavia horror show continues

Romeo Lavia lies stricken after a blow to the head.

The signing of Romeo Lavia continues to be an absolute disaster. After missing the entirety of his debut season at Stamford Bridge, he’s now missed more than half of this campaign too, and it doesn’t look like we’ll be seeing him anytime soon:

“We don’t know yet but could be a few weeks more,” Maresca said of the crocked Belgian.
