Newcastle United and West Ham are among the clubs showing an interest in Lens defender Kevin Danso as he could move for affordable money this January.

Sources with a close understanding of Danso’s situation have informed CaughtOffside that Newcastle look to be showing the strongest interest in the 26-year-old at the moment, but others in the Premier League and elsewhere in Europe also have him on their lists.

West Ham and Wolves are also keen on Danso, while big names like Juventus, Inter Milan, Roma, Bayern Munich, Fenerbahce and Villarreal could also be teams to watch as Lens could sell for around €25-30m.

Newcastle could perhaps do with strengthening in defence for the second half of the season, giving Eddie Howe more depth to work with for the rest of the campaign.

The Magpies are in fine form at the moment, climbing up to fifth place in the Premier League table, but it won’t be easy to stay in the fight for Champions League qualification without improving the team this winter.

Danso looks like just the kind of player who could improve Newcastle without costing a fortune, so it will be interesting to see if they can get a deal done.

Clearly, the Austria international will be in demand, though, and West Ham would also do well to try to move ahead in the race for his signature.

The Hammers are enduring a difficult season under new manager Julen Lopetegui, so surely need to spend some money this January if they are to steer clear of the relegation zone.

Danso would surely view Newcastle as the more tempting project right now, though, while it’s also clear that some big names in Europe could present him with exciting opportunities.
