January has reached the most exciting stage as we enter the final weeks of the window, and there looks sure to be some significant movement at Chelsea over the next few days.

There been a lot of rumour and not a lot of action – it feels like the pressure is building up and we could see a rush of sales and maybe even a purchase or loan.

One area of the team which needs reinforcement is central midfield. Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez are playing every game when fit, because their backup Romeo Lavia just can’t get his own injury situation under control. A short term solution for the rest of the season could be really handy, and one has been suggested by our writer Simon Phillips on his Substack.

He claims that Chelsea have been offered the chance to sign former Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz on loan. The Brazilian was great for Villa for a few years before leaving to join Juventus in the summer. However he’s not getting into Thiago Motta’s team there, and they’d love to trim the wage bill by moving him on for a bit.

Luiz capable of doing a job in needed roles for Chelsea

Luiz could be perfect for the Enzo role – they’re not totally like for like, but they’ve got plenty of overlapping skills.

What is actually even more in need is a proper number 6. Luiz could do that job too, not as well as Moises Caicedo, but he’d easily be able to replace him later in games just to give him a rest.

If the loan terms are reasonable, and we don’t want to commit to a permanent signing of someone else, this could be a smart move for us.
