Having been in negotiations over the player for over a fortnight and seeing their opening £22 million bid rejected, the Reds’ pursuit of Patrick Dorgu is now at the ‘final stage’, according to Italian football expert Nicolo Schira.

United will reportedly pay Lecce £31m to get the deal over the line amid lingering interest from Napoli, who threatened to hijack the transfer.

Dorgu’s arrival is then expected to pave the way for Tyrell Malacia to depart on loan in the final days of the window after garnering a lengthy list of suitors since his return to action this season. He spent 17 months sidelined with a knee injury and has faced a battle to reclaim a starting spot, with it now looking as though he’s been deemed surplus to requirements by Amorim.

United had identified Dorgu as their first-choice full-back this month and, as such, were unrelenting in their efforts to sanction his arrival.

He will occupy Amorim’s newly implemented wing-back role on the left-hand side, so it remains to be seen where Luke Shaw will rank in the boss’ pecking order when he returns to the fold.

The 20-year-old Danish international earned high praise from his ex-Nordsjaelland coach, Johannes Hoff Thorup, who told Bold: “I had him as a U14 and U17 player, and he did very well there, as he is doing now.

“He is a very dynamic and physical player who can run 90 minutes, and I actually don’t think he missed a training session in the time he was here in North Zealand, so he really is a machine in that regard. A very humble boy who works hard for things.”
