Five Bundesliga teams have made enquiries into the availability of Manchester City midfielder James McAtee this month.
McAtee has been linked with an exit this month after failing to nail down a regular role in Pep Guardiola’s plans. The 22-year-old has featured for just 36 minutes in the Premier League, though provided a reminder of his quality during Saturday’s 8-0 win over Salford City.
McAtee scored a hat-trick as Manchester City eased into the FA Cup’s fourth round at the Etihad. Interest in the midfielder has now increased and Fabrizio Romano is reporting that Germany is the ‘most likely destination’ for McAtee if he leaves City this month.
Bayer Leverkusen, Mainz, RB Leipzig, Borussia Dortmund and Stuttgart have all enquired about McAtee’s availability. The final decision will come from Manchester City and the player, who will want clarity on his long-term future.
Pep Guardiola discussed McAtee after his hat-trick against Salford and called the academy product a ‘special’ player.
“He’s a special, talented player,” said the Spaniard.
“The generation of Morgan Rogers, Cole Palmer, Liam Delap, Romeo Lavia, Jadon Sancho. All the players that play really well in the Premier League.
“He was a main player there and captain and a City fan.
“I’m not going to deny how happy I am. It’s not easy to score a hat trick but he can play better. First half was not his best and he has to do that.
“But he’s an exceptional guy and he has special talent.
“When he plays close to the opposition, he has an incredible sense of goal. His work ethic is unbelievable and he is aggressive.
“Today was not easy. He was man marked in the middle. I’m really pleased for him.”
