The transfer window is here which means the speculation and gossip is set to ramp up. January offers opportunity and we’ve picked out five Premier League players who are badly in need of a move this month.

Marcus Rashford – Manchester United

Marcus Rashford could not have been clearer in his desire to leave Manchester United last month. Dropped from the squad for the Manchester Derby, he announced his intention to explore new opportunities.

“For me, personally, I think I’m ready for a new challenge and the next steps,” Rashford told Henry Winter.

“When I leave, it’s going to be no hard feelings. You’re not going to have any negative comments from me about Manchester United. That’s me as a person.”

During the 2022/23 campaign, Rashford shone to score 30 goals in all competitions, but his form has dramatically declined. The constant noise around him has been a distraction and it is perhaps best for all parties that he leaves this month.

With sales required to provide funds for Ruben Amorim, Rashford’s exit would inject some much needed cash to the kitty. Paris Saint-Germain, long-term suitors, are monitoring his situation.

Ben Chilwell – Chelsea

Last summer, Chelsea informed Ben Chilwell that he did not feature in the club’s plans. Part of a bomb squad frozen out under new head coach Enzo Maresca, he failed to secure a move away before the summer deadline. He’s featured for just 45 minutes so far this season.

Chelsea, however, face a struggle to offload the 28-year-old, whose high wages and injury record are a concern for interested clubs. Atletico Madrid and West Ham have been linked, though the Blues are likely to make a huge loss on the £50m fee paid in 2020.

Kieran Tierney – Arsenal

Kieran Tierney has been told by Arsenal that the Gunners won’t be taking up the additional option in his contract. The Scotland international will be a free agent in the summer and can negotiate a pre-contract with foreign clubs this month.

Despite his injury record, the 27-year-old could be a shrewd signing for several clubs. Celtic appear the frontrunners to land Tierney, who is understood to be open to a return to the Scottish champions. The left-back won the PFA Scotland Young Player of the Year in three consecutive campaigns during his first spell with The Bhoys.

Evan Ferguson – Brighton

Fabian Hurzeler has shut down reports that Brighton could let Evan Ferguson leave this month but the speculation has continued to circle. Ferguson’s progress has stalled with the Seagulls, having been unable to regain a regular role after returning from injury.

With Joao Pedro, Georginio Rutter and Danny Welbeck all ahead of him, a short-term loan could kickstart the Irishman’s fortunes. Dubbed a potential £100m footballer just 18 months ago, there would be a long list of clubs prepared to snap up the striker’s services.

Sergio Reguilon – Tottenham

You could be forgiven for forgetting that Sergio Reguilon was still a Tottenham player. The left-back spent last season out on loan before finding himself back on the fringes of Ange Postecoglou’s squad. Reguilon has totalled just 41 minutes across two substitute appearances this season, despite Postecoglou’s depleted defensive options. Out of contract in the summer, an exit could be fast-tracked this month.
