Bayern Munich host Inter Milan in the Champions League on Tuesday, so here’s five footballers who have played for both clubs over the years.
The Croatian veteran spent six seasons at Inter, where he made 254 appearances and won the Scudetto in 2020/21. It was there he gained a reputation for being one of the best wing-backs in Europe, and developed a knack for scoring goals, too: he reached double digits in a single campaign three times, scoring 55 overall.
That spell was interrupted by a season-long loan move to Bayern Munich in 2019/20, helping the German outfit win the Uefa Champions League for the sixth time in their history. Now 36, Perišić lines out for PSV Eindhoven in the Eredivisie.
‘La Piranha’ has had one hell of a career playing for some of the biggest clubs in Europe and South America. The midfielder won nine league titles in Italy, Germany and Spain, eight of which he won consecutively.
After four gloryful years at Juventus, Arturo Vidal joined Bayern Munich in 2015. He went on to make 124 appearances and win three Bundesliga titles in three years. After a two-year stint at Barcelona, he joined Inter Milan with whom he won the Scudetto alongside Perišić in 2020/21. He played 71 times for the Nerazzurri.
The 37-year-old is still togging out all these years later. He returned to Chile in 2024 to play for Colo-Colo, the club where he began his career, inspiring the club to glory in the Primera División last season. It was the 13th league title of his career.
In 2023 Yann Sommer broke a near decade-long spell at Borussia Monchengladbach to join Bayern Munich as injury cover for Manuel Neuer. He went on to make 25 appearances and win the Bundesliga before moving to Inter after just one season in Bavaria.
The goalkeeper is now in his second year in Milan, having won the Scudetto in his first. He will be starting between the sticks when he faces his former club this week.
One of the best centre-backs of the 2000’s, Lúcio made a name for himself at Bayer Leverkusen, reaching the Champions League final in 2002. Two years later he made the inevitable move to Bayern Munich, where he won three Bundesliga titles and three German Cups across five seasons, making 189 appearances.
‘The Horse’ then linked up with Jose Mourinho at Inter Milan in 2009 and finally got his hands on the European Cup in his first season, beating Bayern of all teams in the final. He played in 123 matches for the Italian outfit.
After breaking through at Köln in the mid-noughties, Lukas Podolski moved to Bayern Munich in 2006. He spent three underwhelming years at the club, scoring just 26 goals in 106 appearances and winning the Bundesliga once.
The Polish-born Germany international returned to Köln for another three seasons, but the club were relegated to the second tier in his final year, prompting his move to Arsenal. Two and a half years in, he was loaned out to Inter, where he scored one goal in 18 appearances.
