Brentford head coach Thomas Frank has said that, while Newcastle United are the favourites for Wednesday night's Carabao Cup quarter-final, the Bees back themselves to progress.

St James' Park plays host to the 7.45pm kick-off as the west Londoners aim to reach the semi-finals of a domestic cup competition for the second time ever.

Newcastle, who go into the game having defeated Leicester City 4-0 in the Premier League on Saturday, and their head coach Eddie Howe have also been open with their own ambitions in the competition as they seek to end a 69-year wait for a trophy in Tyneside.

“We’re taking this competition seriously and really want to progress to the semi-final," said Frank. "It's a massive game.

“It’s one game, it’s a quarter-final with everything at stake. We have massive belief that we can go there and win, but it will be incredibly difficult.

“I’m very aware that they haven’t won anything in... I don't know how long. I think they’ve got the team to win something.

“On paper, Newcastle are the favourites, they’re a massive club and are at home - but we fancy ourselves."

Brentford defeated the Magpies 4-2 in the Premier League earlier this month courtesy of goals from Bryan Mbeumo, Yoane Wissa, Nathan Collins and Kevin Schade.

Frank expects a different match this time around and explained what his side needs to do to give themselves the best chance of coming away with a victory.

“This game will be completely different," he continued. "Every game is a new story.

“We will face a team that will come flying out for a late kick-off under the floodlights. They will take no prisoners and they will go after us - but we are ready.

“They have top players and are well-coached. I’m pretty sure we’ll know what they’ll come with, and I’m also pretty sure Eddie and his team will know what we’ll come with.

“We know we need to defend well: that's not just with a low block but also in the middle with duels and with high pressure.

"I’m convinced we’ll score, it’s just if we’re good enough defensively."
