From set-piece manager to ‘touchline henchman’ – Amorim finds new role for former Ten Hag collaborator | OneFootball

Manchester United technical coach Andreas Georgson has seen his role steeply diminished with Ruben Amorim in charge.

The 42-year-old had previous experiences at Arsenal and Southampton among other clubs, so the Red Devils identified him as the right profile to enhance their set-piece efficiency, thus deciding to add him to Erik ten Hag’s staff last summer.

However, the Dutchman was sacked 14 matches later, thus cutting short the two men’s collaboration. But while Amorim couldn’t find a place in his staff for caretaker coach Ruud van Nistelrooy who was unceremoniously shown the door, the Portuguese was happy to keep Georgson.

Nevertheless, it became clear the Swede has been reduced to an afterthought at Carrington, with Amorim’s assistant Carlos Fernandes assuming set-piece duties. The latter is the one barking instructions for the players whenever the team has a set-piece or his defending one.

Needless to say, Fernandes has an awful lot to do on this front, with the Red Devils conceding from set pieces in almost every contest. They shockingly allowed in two direct corner kicks in the space of seven days.

Amorim himself was interrogated about Georgson’s role at the club following the defeat to Arsenal earlier this month, and the 39-year-old explained that the Swede will simply help Fernandes in set-piece training.

But according to Manchester Evening News, an episode that occurred during the Boxing Day defeat to Wolves suggests that Georgson may have found himself a new ‘role’, as he rushed to the fourth official to claim that Rayan Ait-Nouri should have been booked for a challenge on Amad Diallo.

Hence, the source sarcastically notes how ‘Georgson has gone from coaching the set-pieces to being United’s touchline henchman.’

So it remains to be seen for how long the former Malmo coach will remain at Carrington before finding himself a better gig.
