Harry Maguire joked that there are probably a ‘few nicknames’ for him after social media saluted the Manchester United defender as ‘Harrydinho’ on Thursday.

Having scored a dramatic Europa League quarter-final winner against Lyon as a makeshift centre-forward in the last round, Maguire was central to another huge result for the Red Devils this week.

The centre-back help set up Casemiro’s opener against Athletic Bilbao with some unfamiliar wing play, beating his man with a sharp shift and shimmy before delivering a dangerous cross into the box.

Manuel Ugarte’s flick was then headed home by Casemiro, though it was Maguire who took the plaudits.

The goal set United on their way to a 3-0 win over the 10-man Spanish side in their semi-final, with Ruben Amorim’s men having one foot in the final.

“What a winger! I don’t think he even knew he had that in his locker,” Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes said at full-time.

Amorim was also full of praise for Maguire, whose time at Manchester United has included some notable lows.

“Sometimes there are moments in our life when we have a difficult time,” Amorim said.

“Harry had a difficult time when everything he did was seen as being wrong. Now he can enjoy it. Everything he does has been right.”

Maguire is a ‘big-game player’

Former England and Tottenham winger Andros Townsend was hugely impressed by Maguire’s moment of magic, calling the defender a ‘big-game player’.

“It wasn’t just the cross, it was the little shimmies and the chops and the cutbacks,” Townsend told Football Daily.

“I had to look twice because it looked like it was Alejandro Garnacho. It was so smooth, it wasn’t stiff. It was amazing. Fair play to Harry Maguire.

“We were saying before the game about what a great character he is – a big-game player who rises to the occasion and doesn’t feel pressure – and we saw it in that moment there. He was unbelievable.”
