Brentford came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Premier League champions Manchester City, in one of the best games Gtech Community Stadium has seen since the Bees' promotion to the top flight.

A Phil Foden brace put City ahead in the second half, before Yoane Wissa pulled one back with eight minutes to go. And, in additional time, Christian Nørgaard rose highest to head past Stefan Ortega and dramatically equalise at the death.

Thomas Frank made one change from Brentford's last league game - a 5-0 win away at Southampton on 4 January - with Vitaly Janelt replacing Kevin Schade in the starting XI.

Wissa had the first shot of the game after five minutes in west London. The forward was given the ball by Mathias Jensen wide on the right side of the penalty area and, after he cut into the box, he fired an effort back across himself and towards the near post, but it went just wide of Ortega's goal.

Joško Gvardiol had the visitors' first attempt as he struck from the edge of the box, which was the conclusion of lots of City possession, but Mark Flekken got down low and held the tame effort.

Wissa had another attempt with 12 minutes on the clock and, perhaps, he should've scored. A lofted ball over the top to Bryan Mbeumo was remarkably hooked back into the six-yard box, but his team-mate just couldn't get anything on it as it whistled past him and was collected by Ortega.

Mbeumo almost recreated his goal at the Gtech against Arsenal - and it came after a magnificent move from the Bees. Starting with Mads Roerslev winning the ball from Savinho at one end, good work from Wissa, Nørgaard and Mikkel Damsgaard resulted in Mbeumo charging down the right. Like against the Gunners, he cut inside and fired low towards Ortega's left but, unlike David Raya, the City keeper got a hand on it to turn it past the post.

Wissa was at it again on 20 minutes as Damsgaard played him through with an intricate ball behind the City defence. He squared up Manuel Akanji inside the penalty area, going in, then out, then in, then out, before striking just wide from the left-hand side with his right foot.

After a few Bees chances, it was City's turn to go close. Kevin De Bruyne found himself out wide on the left and whipped one of his trademark passes across the face of goal. Erling Haaland met it at the back post but wasn't central enough and his diving header crashed wide.

It was the hosts who were back causing the problems again with the half-hour mark approaching, as Nørgaard picked up the ball and fed Keane Lewis-Potter, who was overlapping down the left. His cross wasn't good enough and was cleared out for a corner but, from that set-piece, the ball was cleared to Damsgaard on the edge of the box and the Dane's half-volley was sweetly struck, just into one of the many bodies inside the area.

The game began to have the cliché basketball-style feel to it, with both teams having chances at either end in quick succession. The best of those came when Matheus Nunes found himself in acres of space, charging towards Flekken's goal. Nathan Collins slid across to try and block the shot before Nunes chopped back inside, and it was then Jensen who did incredibly to get back and rob the Portuguese international as he was about to finish from close range.

Mateo Kovačić had an equally good chance moments later when his low shot from the edge of the area whistled inches wide of the post. De Bruyne wasn't quite as close just before half-time when his effort was inches away from clearing the stadium.

The first chance of the half fell to Brentford after they won a free-kick that was practically a corner on the left-hand side. It was floated in by Jensen and met by Collins, but his glancing header dropped the wrong side of the far post.

Savinho came closest five minutes into the second half when he sprinted from inside his own half, past three Brentford players, and arrowed a shot off the post.

Mbeumo was next to try his luck, when Jensen fantastically brought down a lofted pass with a Cruyff turn, before passing to the Cameroon international - however, his shot was blazed over the bar.

Haaland's header was the next effort of the game, before Foden raced clear and looked set to have an attempt on goal before more good defending from Roerslev and Collins. Another City chance came before the hour-mark when Savinho was played in before firing wide.

It was good defending at the other end with 30 minutes to play, when Gvardiol chased back with the Bees on the counter attack and, with the west Londoners three-on-three against the City defence, Wissa was in a fantastic position as he entered the penalty area. But it was the Croatian full-back whose slide tackle was enough to keep the scores level.

The ball was in the back of the net on 65 minutes when Damsgaard struck from the edge of the area into the bottom corner, but the referee raised his flag, which was backed up by VAR, with the midfielder in an offside position earlier in the move.

Before the result of the VAR check had even finished being read out, City were ahead. An attack which started with Savinho in the centre of the pitch, saw De Bruyne receive the ball on the right flank. He crossed into Foden, who had found himself in space inside the penalty area, and the England international's side-foot finish nestled into the bottom corner.

Brentford were so close to an equaliser with 70 minutes on the clock. A Damsgaard pass split the City defence and caught out Ortega, who had come out of goal but misjudged his timing, meaning Mbeumo got there first with the keeper stranded. Because he was out wide, the Bees man had to play it across goal to Wissa and, with no Ortega in goal, it looked certain to be 1-1 but for a goal-line clearance from Nathan Aké.

City doubled their lead with 12 minutes to play, when Savinho robbed the ball off Roerslev, which started a dangerous attack for the visitors. An initial shot was saved by Flekken, before the second was finished by a combination of Foden and De Bruyne, with the former being credited with the goal.

However, the Bees pulled their first one back through Wissa, when Roerslev connected with a pass out to him on the volley, which squared it across to his team-mate, who had the composure to bring it down, bide his time, and fire home from close range.

City looked to extend their advantage with the game becoming stretched. Savinho had another attempt which Flekken saved superbly, before substitute James McAtee curled over.

And those misses would prove costly as the west Londoners found the equaliser with just a couple of minutes remaining. Lewis-Potter floated a gorgeous ball into the penalty area, which was met by the head of Nørgaard, who headed home to level against the Premier League champions.

Mbeumo went so close to a winner, when Schade ran in behind, before squaring to his fellow forward, who controlled and tried to finish towards the far post inside the area, but an Aké header cleared away his effort, which looked to be going wide anyway.

Frank: What a crazy game!

Brentford head coach Thomas Frank praised his side's performance and mentality after Tuesday's entertaining draw against Manchester City.

“What a game! What an advert for the Premier League! Wow - an absolutely crazy game," said Frank.

“Our performance was fantastic. I loved how brave we were in phase one, I loved the way we pressed high and were aggressive, I loved the mentality when we were 2-0 down to stay in the game and still believe we could get something from the game.

“I think it’s the first time in my time in the Premier League that we really went toe to toe against a ‘top three’ team.

“At 2-0, you know it’s difficult but I knew that if we scored, there’s always a chance. We could’ve won it in the end."

Nørgaard: I'm so proud of this team

Brentford captain and late goalscorer Christian Nørgaard has spoken on the Bees' comeback against Man City, highlighting the character the side showed to score two late goals at the Gtech.

"That was just a usual day at the office! At home, we've produced some fantastic games this season and today was another one," said Nørgaard.

"I'm really, really proud of how we hung in there, kept going and got a well-deserved point.

"It was tough - there was some double and triple transitions where you had to really dig deep to get behind the ball or join the attack, but that's what characterises this team.

"As captain, it was important for me to tell the team to do the basics right, defend well, and definitely not concede again; as long as it's 2-0, you're in the game and that's exactly what happened."
