Mats Hummels could be a one-and-done at Roma after a seesawing season where he initially struggled to capture an acceptable level of form and a regular role and a recent lull where he watched a few games from the bench.

According to La Repubblica, the defender might decide not to re-up his original contract and let it expire on June 30th to choose his next home in the summer. Claudio Ranieri stated that the choice would be up to the player.

Hummels recently opened up about his Roma future to the German press.

“I won’t decide in the next few weeks. In recent years, I’ve always listened to my body, my family, and my son. I miss spending time with him. There are many responsibilities when you have a seven-year-old kid. But I think we’ll find a way to be happy.”

The call could come down to family reasons rather than football-related ones. His wife Cathy is going through some health problems.

The 36-year-old has appeared 15 times this campaign, scoring once. Before heading to the Giallorossi, he spent the entirety of his career in Germany, starring for Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich. He won the Bundesliga six times.

Our Take on Roma and Hummels

His season has been a rollercoaster, as he started poorly, then he had a couple of almost dominant months, and finally his minutes dipped again, likely due to a minor physical problem or lack of conditioning. The Giallorossi are better suited to manage him after their January additions. However, it sounds like he’ll move back to his home country for motives behind their control.
