Despite being something of a world-class talent when at his best, Manchester United should be looking for ways to cash in on Luke Shaw as soon as possible.

They may now have an unmissable opportunity to do so, too, as Napoli have reportedly established their interest in hashing out a deal for the 29-year-old.

NapoliCalcioLive claims Antonio Conte has shortlisted Shaw to succeed the outcast Mario Rui, and with the Serie A giants entering the New Year only two points away from league leaders Atalanta, reinforcements might be necessary in January if they want to claim their second Scudetto in three seasons.

Without a shadow of a doubt, the England international is Ruben Amorim’s most reliable fullback. His attacking exploits have often proved game-defining for United and, as such, have been sorely missed during his continued absences.

Yet, it’s such injury concerns that have made Shaw simply too unreliable for any manager to depend upon throughout the course of a campaign. His last Premier League start came over 10 months ago, after which he was ruled out of the remainder of the term.

Amorim can’t rely on Shaw – it’s time to cut ties

Shaw returned to the fold for a brief period when Amorim took the reins in November but was only able to make three half-hour cameos before sustaining another setback. Now, it remains to be seen when he’ll be deemed fit enough to make a matchday squad, let alone start a competitive match.

He has just under three years remaining on his June 2027 contract, meaning the chance is there for United to try and recuperate some funds from his potential exit.

A move to Naples would see Shaw reunite with ex-teammate Scott McTominay, who’s enjoyed a stellar start to life in Italy.
