Inter Milan have been branded as a “giant with a feet of clay” after their performance in yesterday evening’s 4-4 Serie A thriller against Juventus.

Today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, note the Nerazzurri’s failure to control proceedings in a match they deem to be a “comedy.”

There were certainly moments in yesterday’s Derby d’Italia where Inter looked like the very best version of themselves under Simone Inzaghi.

These tended to come when the team got forward.

The Nerazzurri were ruthless when they exploited any gaps in the Juventus formation. They produced several impressive counterattacks.

From switches out to the flank to intricate linkup play in midfield, Inter were able to cut Juventus apart on multiple occasions.

But it was at the other end of the pitch where things looked much uglier from Inter.

Last season, the Nerazzurri did not only get forward impressively.

Inter were able to control matches for ninety minutes.

That was the basis of Inter’s dominant form in the league as they won the title last campaign.

The Nerazzurri could go through the gears and attack quickly. But just as importantly, they could take the sting out of games.

When Inter needed to slow down the tempo in possession they did just that.

And when Simone Inzaghi’s team faced attacking pressure, they could retreat into an effective defensive shape.

Absolutely none of that was on show against Juventus yesterday.

When Inter were not attacking, they seemed to lack any semblance of balance.

In the view of the Gazzetta, that is the principle difference between yesterday’s Inter and the team of last season.

The quality and potential are still there, undoubtedly.

But from individual errors to a lack of collective coordination, Inter keep allowing teams back into matches rather than grinding the life out of them.
