Inter Milan are not yet out of the race as Newcastle United, Aston Villa, and Spurs target Jonathan David is yet to decide his future.
This according to Italian outlet FCInterNews. They report that the Nerazzurri are waiting to strike, and see if the Canadian lowers his wage demands.
Lille striker Jonathan David has certainly been on Inter Milan’s radar for a while.
The 25-year-old has confirmed that he will leave Lille on a free transfer at the end of the season when his contract expires.
And Inter are certainly a club with a penchant for big name free transfers.
Therefore, the Nerazzurri have already courted David over the last year or so. This included a visit by the Canadian international’s agent to the San Siro.
However, towards the end of 2024, it seemed as though Inter had cooled their interest in signing David significantly.
There are a couple of reasons for this.
First of all, Jonathan David reportedly wants to join a club where he will be a first-choice starter. It would be hard for Inter to guarantee the Canadian this, considering the presence of Lautaro Martinez and Marcus Thuram.
Then, there would be David’s demands on personal terms.
On the one hand, Inter are ready to invest in an attacking signing next summer. There will be room in the budget once they offload the wages of Marko Arnautovic and Joaquin Correa.
But David has reportedly made his demands clear of wages in the region of €6-7 million net per season, as well as a €10 million sign-on bonus.
Due to these factors, Inter have not yet made a decisive move to try and sign Jonathan David.
That does not mean, however, that the Nerazzurri have lost their interest in the Canadian’s signature entirely.

On the contrary. According to FCIN, Inter have simply been waiting patiently to seen how David’s situation develops.
The Canadian himself has not hidden that his preference would be a transfer to Barcelona.
However, with Robert Lewandowski still in outstanding form even well into his thirties, it may be hard for David to convince the Blaugranas to sign him. Particularly with their well-known financial issues.
Meanwhile, there have been some offers from the Premier League. According to FCIN, the likes of Newcastle United, Aston Villa, and Tottenham Hotspur are all keen to sign David.
But the outlet note that David has not really warmed to the idea of joining any of these English clubs.
Therefore, the Canadian international has not yet made a decision about his future.
And this has kept Inter’s interest in signing David alive.
The Nerazzurri expect that, should the 25-year-old go much longer without receiving an offer from a club that he wants to join, he may lower his demands.
And in that event, Inter may feel that it is the right moment to strike.
This would be similar to the strategy that Inter employed to sign Marcus Thuram in 2023.
The alternative would be to sign a striker like Bologna’s Santiago Castro. Castro would cost a fee of €35-40 million – but demand considerably lower wages.
