When Arsenal beat Ipswich Town 1-0 on Friday, they extended their unbeaten run to 11 matches.

Harvey Downes points out that it’s Arsenal’s third-longest unbeaten run to end a year, only beaten by 1986 (17) and 2003 (16). This December is also the most games Arsenal have played in a calendar month without suffering defeat since January 2007.

But you wouldn’t necessarily know it from the mood around the club right now. Bukayo Saka’s serious injury is certainly playing a part in dampening spirits, but the main concern is that the Gunners still don’t have their hands on a trophy yet.

“Hopefully new year will bring trophies! This club deserves it,” Rice said after the Ipswich game. “Winning games is great, but it means nothing if we don’t win anything at the end.”

Arsenal are in the hunt for silverware on a number of fronts at the moment, making the League Cup semi-finals, sitting second in the Premier League and third in the Champions League League Phase tables.

There’s also the FA Cup, though Arsenal are kicking things off in the third round with a match against Manchester United, so there’s a long way to go there.

And whilst Arsenal are close to the top of the Premier League and Champions League tables in terms of position, Liverpool are quite far ahead on points in both competitions.

Arsenal are going to have to raise their levels again in the new year to win anything, and that’s not going to be easy without Saka for the next couple of months.
