Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has warned Enzo Maresca that Cole Palmer will want to leave if Chelsea don’t start competing for major trophies soon.
The Blues suffered a second defeat to Brighton in less than a week and were outclassed in every department as they slumped to a 3-0 defeat.
Maresca’s side offered very little across the 90 minutes, with Yankuba Minteh scoring twice after a brilliant opener from Karou Mitoma.
The defeat means it’s now two wins in the last nine Premier League games for the Blues and they will drop out of the top four if Manchester City beat Newcastle on Saturday.
Maresca made changes from the FA Cup defeat to the Seagulls, but only one of those changes came in attack, with Noni Madueke coming in for Jadon Sancho.
It was another difficult evening for Palmer, who cut a frustrated figure and the 22-year-old now hasn’t scored in his last five games for the Blues.
Palmer cut a frustrated figure against Brighton.
Palmer has been brilliant this season with 14 goals and six assists, whilst Maresca has stated how he’s very proud to work with the England international.
The 45-year-old also urged Palmer’s team-mates to show as much desire as him to improve when speaking after the game.
However, Carragher has warned that Palmer will want to leave unless Chelsea start competing for major trophies soon.
“I mentioned his [Palmer’s] frustration before,” he said on Sky Sports’ commentary of the game as quoted by The Metro.
“When you talk about projects and players and where Chelsea want to go, you look at him as a central figure of it.
“But if they don’t get better and start competing for trophies, he will want to leave, he’s one of the best players in the Premier League.

“He will want to be competing for the Champions League and Premier League.”
Carragher isn’t wrong and it’s a problem the Blues will face the longer they stay out of the Champions League, and it looks like they are facing an uphill battle to qualify for Europe’s Premier club competition.
