John Herdman has shared his thoughts following his decision to step down as head coach of Toronto FC. The former manager opened up about the challenges and emotions tied to leaving a club where he worked to rebuild a team that had endured several disappointing seasons.
Herdman’s journey with Toronto FC began on October 5, 2023, with a difficult debut—a 3-0 defeat to Charlotte FC. Despite the rocky start, hopes were high that Herdman could guide the team toward a brighter future. His leadership helped foster optimism, especially with improved performances at the beginning of the 2024 MLS season.
Toronto FC’s 2024 campaign began with promise. Herdman’s side kicked off the season on February 25, 2024, with a solid 0-0 draw against Cincinnati. Soon after, victories followed, raising fans’ hopes that the team could finally turn a corner under his guidance.
"Personally, I have made the difficult decision that it’s the right time for me to step away from the club, as the organization defines its vision for the future. It has been an honour to wear the Toronto FC crest and contribute to the growth of the club. "- John Herdman
Despite these moments of progress, Toronto FC ultimately failed to qualify for the MLS Playoffs in the Eastern Conference. The team’s inability to secure consistent results led to widespread criticism and sparked discussions about the club’s need for a long-term rebuilding project.
"Working with this dedicated group of players and staff has been a true privilege. I want to thank Keith Pelley and MLSE ownership for the opportunity, and I also want to thank the incredible fans for the support they’ve shown me both on and off the pitch. I wish the organization success going forward, and I look forward to the next chapter in my career."- John Herdman
In his farewell remarks, Herdman expressed deep appreciation for the opportunity to lead Toronto FC and for the support he received from players, staff, and fans. He noted the difficulty of the decision to step away but emphasized his confidence that the team is on the right path toward a brighter future.
