Manchester United fans have been bellowing out Alejandro Garnacho’s chant for large portions of tonight’s clash with Rangers.

For many, the prospect of losing one of their most exhilarating academy talents of recent years is unfathomable as it is – never mind selling him to a direct Premier League rival like Chelsea.

The Blues are now preparing their opening proposal for Garnacho, and after seeing Napoli’s £40 million bid get swiftly rebuffed, they know United are willing to play hardball.

Fabrizio Romano confirmed in the build-up to kick-off that Chelsea will make a ‘formal’ approach, having already spoken with the player’s camp to presumably gauge his interest. Numerous outlets have claimed he would prefer to stay in the English top flight over moving to Serie A, giving Todd Boehly and Co. all the clearance they need to go all-out in their pursuit.

Retaining academy talent like Garnacho is what United stands for

Should any deal get over the line in the final fortnight of the window, it’d see the Reds part ways with a player who boasts 37 goal contributions since breaking into the first team only two seasons ago. He won the FA Youth Cup in 2021/2022 and was named Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year upon the culmination of that same campaign.

Amidst the Old Trafford faithful’s clear display of appreciation for their Carrington graduate, Samuel Luckhurst took to X/Twitter to highlight just how wrong it’d be for INEOS to offload Garnacho, writing: “United fans singing Garnacho’s name. He’s been their best player tonight. The prospect of Ineos selling him on the cheap and taking a knife to the club’s academy identity would be unforgivable.”
