The ongoing saga between Real Madrid and the Spanish refereeing system has taken another dramatic turn, with La Liga President Javier Tebas firing back at the club’s recent criticisms.
Real Madrid had filed a formal complaint regarding refereeing decisions in their match against Espanyol, which culminated in videos and statements from club members expressing their discontent with the officiating.
Tebas took to social media to respond directly to Real Madrid’s grievances, highlighting what he perceives as a stark inconsistency in their stance on refereeing reform.
In a pointed tweet, Tebas reminded followers of a La Liga meeting in April 2023 where a proposed overhaul of the refereeing system was on the table. He criticized Real Madrid for opposing this reform.
“I am not at all surprised by Real Madrid’s letter, as it does not say anything different from what their television has been repeating for some time.
“Many of us defend a radical change in the refereeing system, moving closer to the English or German model, with a completely different organisation and much more transparency in all the structural decisions of Spanish refereeing.”
“What is truly striking is that, at a LaLiga meeting on 19 April 2023, we debated and even voted on this change, and Real Madrid opposed it,” he said.
Tebas went on to add more fuel to the fire by implying certain corruption cases against Real Madrid and president Florentino Perez.
“Could it have something to do with the fact that, at that time, the president of the RFEF was Rubiales and Florentino Perez was a member of the RFEF Board of Directors? And mind you, the ‘Negreira’ case was already in court, and Real Madrid took weeks to appear. Why?” he said.
“By the way, when it comes to ‘corrupt systems’, there are few lessons they can give. And I am not referring to Real Madrid as an institution,” he added.
These statements by Perez is sure to widen the rift between Real Madrid and the footballing institutions, which have been at loggerheads for quite some time now.
