Lautaro Martinez catapulted Inter to a decisive 1-0 away win against Sparta Prague in the penultimate Champions League round. In doing so, El Toro entered the Giuseppe Meazza folklore.
Indeed, Martinez’s 12th-minute winner marked his 14th goal for Inter in the Champions League. As such, he drew level with Nerazzurri legend Adriano as the club’s joint-record goalscorer in Europe’s most prestigious club competition.
Martinez couldn’t hide his excitement for writing his name down in Inter Milan’s history books.
“The drought is over, but I always evaluate performances in a comprehensive way,” the Inter captain told Sky Sport via FCInterNews. “I work every day for the team and my teammates, and when the goals come, it completes the performance.
“
I’m going home happy tonight because the goal earned us three crucial points. The record makes me proud, and I dedicate it to my family, who were all watching the match together.”
After an underwhelming first half of the season, the 27-year-old Argentine is seemingly back on track. Indeed, he has found the net in his last three appearances for Inter, scoring in a 3-1 home win against Empoli over the weekend.
Simone Inzaghi can be optimistic about his side’s chances of winning a coveted treble now that the Inter talisman is at his best again. He’ll likely lead the line when the reigning Serie A champions take on perennial strugglers Lecce on the road next weekend.
Inter can’t rest on their laurels as they still trail leaders Napoli by three points, though they have a game in hand.
