Leeds United chairman Paraag Marathe has said that Leeds will spend money this summer, following winning the Championship title.
Leeds United won the Championship title in dramatic circumstances on the final day of the 2024/25 season and now their chairman, Paraag Marathe, has issued a promise to supporters that they will spend every penny possible this summer ahead of their return to the top flight.
Leeds came from behind to defeat relegated Plymouth Argyle by two goals to one at Home Park with Israel international Manor Solomon scoring the winning goal for the Whites in second-half stoppage-time to see them finish the campaign with 100 points, just above Burnley on goal difference.
The Yorkshire giants gained automatic promotion on Easter Monday and there has been a bit of uncertainty at the club already with reports suggesting that manager Daniel Farke could be sacked despite their promotion, whilst the likes of Davide Ancelotti, Roger Schmidt and Giovanni van Bronckhorst have been lined up as potential replacements.
Now Paraag Marathe, the president of the San Francisco 49ers and chairman of Leeds, has said that Leeds will spend money this summer in a bid to avoid an immediate return to the second-tier.
“Whatever they will let us spend, we’ll spend. I can comfortably say that we are going to spend the very last penny that we can.” Marathe told The Financial Times - via the Yorkshire Evening Post.
Marathe has also claimed that Leeds' current shareholders will raise ‘tens of millions’ of pounds to go towards investment in Daniel Farke's squad for next season and beyond, which may be necessary if they want to remain in the top flight and build on it.
Leeds do have some restrictions in this summer’s transfer window, having posted a loss of £60.8 million in their published accounts from the 2023/24 campaign, so they will have to work within boundaries set by the Profit & Sustainability Rules of the Premier League - you cannot rule out a big money sale at this point.
Marathe has indicated that he is well aware of the potential struggles facing Leeds on the pitch, given the apparent growing gulf between England’s top-flight and the rest of the football pyramid.
“I’m under no illusions that it’s going to be easy," Marathe added.
"There’s an argument to be made that there’s a widening gap. With all due to respect to the other clubs, I think we’re different. We have an opportunity we have scale that nobody else has.”
Marathe has yet to publicly comment on the reports that Farke may be out the door at Elland Road this summer following the German winning his third Championship title as a manager after two league titles with Norwich City.
Leeds have what looks set to be a potentially uncertain summer transfer window on the pitch, too, with rumours of West Ham United being interested in duo Ethan Ampadu and Mateo Joseph.
As well as that, Leeds are looking to strengthen and there has been a report from Alan Nixon, via his Patreon, linking them with a move for Olympique de Marseille defender Leonardo Balerdi as well as a plethora of midfielders such as Kalvin Phillips, Sean Longstaff, Tomas Soucek, Julian Weigl and Hidemasa Morita.
Given Marathe’s suggestions and promises, those rumours may well have something to them as they attempt to establish themselves as part of the furniture once again in the Premier League, and it promises to be an exciting summer ahead in terms of players arriving at Elland Road.
