The new Leicester manager, Ruud van Nistelrooy, is finding life difficult at the moment. Many expect them to be in the Championship next year. And they are on the cusp of an unprecedented run of play. Only their home-goal-less streak, for example, should clarify that it's not in a good way.
However, there are games remaining. Lifelong supporters deserve an honest effort to fight relegation. Even if that aspect is inevitable, the fight and desire on a weekly basis need to show up in earnest.
Speaking with reporters, RvN was asked to compare his player and coaching challenges to the present undertaking at LFC. For a moment, the Dutchman appeared to deeply contemplate the question. After the pause, he chose not to directly answer the question, citing the difficulty it would be to assess all prior difficulties honestly in the sport. But the ensuing statement may indicate what he is preaching throughout the locker room:
"I call it a mountain to climb, but life is about climbing mountains. The mountains are there to be climbed. "
There were brief early moments of success when van Nistelrooy first came to Leicester. And since the initial onboarding, the club has 'slipped down,' as he would put it.
The current man in charge views the latest setbacks as an opportunity. Obstacles will always exist, even when a side is in form. Currently, there are many aspects going against them. But failing to attempt to scale the difficult task at hand is unacceptable.
Scaling the steep slope from their current Premier League position could be an impossibility at this point. Regardless, van Nistelrooy needs to show that he can still be the right person for this job. Furthermore, the players need to prove their worth and continue to earn their keep.
When climbing, if something is weighing someone down, it has to be let go. Leicester is a proud club with great history. On-field play needs to reflect this, regardless of which league or competition the Foxes are participating in. Some cuts have already taken place. If a certain degree of escalation doesn't occur soon, then more releases from the mountain will need to take place.
