LFP – Ligue 1’s governing body – have called for an emergency meeting on Wednesday with the presidents of Ligue 1 clubs as another domestic TV rights crisis looms even larger for French football, according to RMC Sport. The outlet reported earlier today that the relationship has seriously deteriorated between LFP and the league’s main broadcaster – DAZN.
The British-based media platform is reportedly withholding domestic TV rights payments due to a perceived lack of loyalty from the Ligue 1 clubs. DAZN are also considering taking legal action against LFP. Ligue 1 clubs were set to receive €57m in TV rights money on Friday, but they only bank beIN Sports’ minor share thus far.
RMC Sport adds that DAZN believe LFP have not done enough to defend their interests in the fight against piracy. Several Ligue 1 club presidents are reportedly very worried the already serious financial situation of French football could worsen. LFP president Vincent Labrune reportedly said to members of the LFP board that the situation is “unfortunately urgent.”
