Liverpool in Contention for ‘Absolutely Sensational’ Matheus Cunha – Is He Worth the Price?

Liverpool are reportedly showing interest in Wolves forward Matheus Cunha, but any potential move could come with a hefty price tag. As Arne Slot begins shaping his squad, is Cunha the right fit for the Reds’ future?

Matheus Cunha’s Rise to Premier League Stardom

Matheus Cunha has been a revelation for Wolverhampton Wanderers this season. The 25-year-old Brazilian forward has netted 14 goals and provided four assists in 27 matches across all competitions, making him one of the standout players in the Premier League. Wolves, fighting to avoid relegation, have relied heavily on his attacking prowess.

It is no surprise that the plaudits are coming in thick and fast. BBC Sport pundit and former Manchester City defender Micah Richards hailed Cunha’s footballing intelligence, describing it as “absolutely sensational” and highlighting his ability to “always scan where he needs to be and always play the right pass.”

Interest in Cunha has been brewing for months. Arsenal and Aston Villa reportedly explored a move in January, but he ultimately stayed at Molineux, committing to a new contract with a £62 million release clause.

Liverpool’s Interest in Cunha – A Serious Target?

According to journalist Graeme Bailey, Liverpool are now closely monitoring Cunha. Speaking to Rousing The Kop, Bailey claimed:

“He’s clearly one they’re aware of, they like him. He’s had a fantastic season and he’ll certainly be in contention but he won’t be cheap.”

Bailey’s report suggests that Cunha is just one of several attacking options Liverpool are considering. While he ticks many of the boxes required for a top forward—pace, versatility, and intelligence—the price tag may be a sticking point.

With FSG traditionally reluctant to overspend, spending over £60 million on a player who, while talented, is not an elite-level goalscorer could be a tough sell. However, Liverpool’s frontline may require reinforcements this summer, and Cunha’s form makes him a compelling option.

What Arne Slot Thinks of Cunha

Liverpool manager Arne Slot has already spoken highly of Cunha, having faced him when Wolves visited Anfield in February. Cunha scored in that fixture, though Liverpool edged out a 2-1 victory.

Ahead of that game, Slot gave the Brazilian a glowing review, stating:

“Matheus Cunha is a quality player and he has the quality to play for one of the top five teams in England.”

Slot’s words carry weight, and given Liverpool’s intent to bolster their attacking options, Cunha’s ability to slot into a high-pressing, dynamic attacking system could be appealing.

Our View – Anfield Index Analysis

For all of Cunha’s qualities, is he truly worth £62 million? Some Liverpool supporters may have their doubts.

Cunha’s technical ability and versatility are undeniable. He works hard, presses well, and has the intelligence to thrive in an attacking system. But there’s a major concern—his goal output isn’t at the elite level. Yes, 14 goals in all competitions is respectable, but for a fee exceeding £60 million, should Liverpool not be targeting a proven 20+ goals-a-season forward?

There’s also the issue of FSG’s spending habits. They are known for being cautious in the market, preferring younger players with long-term potential or those who represent clear value. Spending big on Cunha—who is not a traditional No.9 and has never hit elite-level numbers consistently—seems at odds with their usual strategy.

Some fans might also question whether Cunha is simply having a great season in a struggling side. Wolves have been heavily reliant on him, meaning his numbers could be inflated due to being the focal point of their attack. At Liverpool, where competition for places is fierce, will he be able to replicate that form?

Ultimately, if Liverpool are spending big on a forward, shouldn’t it be on a guaranteed game-changer rather than a player who still has question marks over his consistency?
