The Uruguay international was a second half substitute as the Premier League leaders were held to a 2-2 draw by Manchester United, a result which saw them miss an opportunity to open up an eight-point lead at the top of the table.

As ever, Nunez had an eventual, yet brief, cameo at Anfield.

Denied a shot on goal late on thanks to a fantastic last ditch tackle from Leny Yoro, the striker was also booked for a foul on Matthijs de Ligt in the 77th minute.

Therefore, he must serve a suspension as that was his fifth yellow card in the competition this season and as per the rules, players who pick up five yellow cards in the first 19 Premier League matches of the season will receive a one-match ban.

Of course, the Man United fixture was Liverpool's 19th Premier League match of the campaign as they are playing catch up as a result of last month's Merseyside derby away at Everton being postponed.

However, Nunez is free to play against Spurs and then Accrington Stanley in the FA Cup next weekend as yellow cards are not carried over to either domestic cup competition.

Though he will sit out Liverpool’s next Premier League match which is away at high-flying Nottingham Forest - the only side to beat Arne Slot’s team across any competition this season - on January 14.

The Premier League suspension rules reset for Liverpool now and from this point onwards, any player who is booked 10 times by gameweek 32 will serve a two-match suspension.
