Liverpool legend and television pundit Jamie Carragher has expressed his belief that Trent Alexander-Arnold and his representatives are attempting to “cover their backs” amid the player’s growing links to Real Madrid.
The Liverpool right-back, whose contract expires on 30th June, has become a key target for the Spanish club.
As of today, Alexander-Arnold is free to negotiate with any club for a potential free transfer next season, and Real Madrid are already poised to sign him in the summer.
Real Madrid’s plan is to sign the England international next summer, but they have already made a first approach to Anfield to assess the possibility of securing him in January. But Liverpool rejected this initial attempt to negotiate a transfer for the player.
Now, Carragher shared his views on the situation via social media platform X, where he remarked that Alexander-Arnold and his agents may be seeking to protect their interests in case of a move.
“The most important thing for Liverpool in 2025 is to win the Premier League. No contract or future of any player should get in the way of that. I love Trent as a player, but his team has told Real Madrid to make an offer, knowing that Liverpool would reject it,” Carragher explained.
“It is all about trying to cover their backs when he leaves for free,” he added.
Alexander-Arnold’s potential departure seems increasingly likely after he rejected the latest renewal offers from the Premier League leaders.
This would further strengthen the current European champions, who have been weakened by the serious injury to Dani Carvajal.
As the situation develops, it appears that the right-back’s future will be a key topic of discussion, especially given Liverpool’s current position in the Premier League and the interest from the Spanish giants.
