Liverpool have been handed a major injury boost as Trent Alexander-Arnold returned to training ahead of facing Real Madrid in the Uefa Champions League on Wednesday.

The right-back sustained a hamstring injury during the 2-0 win over Aston Villa in the Premier League, forcing him off the pitch at halftime, earlier this month.

The England international joined his teammates in a training session on Tuesday ahead of the game at Anfield, although Slot confirmed he will not start against Madrid.

Federico Chiesa, who has been plagued by injury and fitness issues since joining Liverpool in the summer, also returned to training this week, but is not available for selection.

Harvey Elliott is set to be named in the matchday squad after recovering from a fractured foot, but won’t start against Real. He has been sidelined since early September.

Kostas Tsimikas has been ruled out of the midweek fixture after sustaining a knock in training last week, while Diogo Jota and Alisson Becker remain out, although the Brazilian goalkeeper is back in training.

“It’s funny that you talk about our injuries because most people only ask about the injuries Real Madrid have but we also have a few recently,” Arne Slot told his pre-match press conference.

“Trent is in the squad but will not be available to start; he can maybe make a few minutes but in an ideal world he maybe doesn’t. If it’s really necessary he can make a few minutes.

“Federico is not in the squad yet – he is training with us, not the whole session but one or two parts.

“Harvey Elliott is in the team but hasn’t played for a long time so he is there but not ready to start.

“Kostas is not there yet, he has an injury as well – so it is quite a list.”
