Despite heavy snowfall and severe delays across various modes of transport, Liverpool's Premier League clash with Manchester United is to go ahead as scheduled.

The fixture was at risk of postponement after wintry conditions covered the Merseyside region in a thick blanket of snow. Officials delayed their decision until midday in the hope that the weather would change and have confirmed the 4.30pm kick-off will be played as planned.

Manchester Airport was closed for almost four hours on Sunday morning after a dump of snow and Liverpool's John Lennon Airport only reopened at 10.15am. Both venues reported severe delays and cancellations.

Despite an amber alert from the Met Office for snow, ice and freezing rain, Liverpool confirmed that the Premier League encounter with their fierce rivals would take place.

"Today's fixture against Manchester United will go ahead as planned," a club statement read. "Two safety meetings were held earlier to assess the weather and travel conditions. We thank everyone involved in helping us to get this game on today. If you're travelling to Anfield then please take extra care. We look forward to seeing you there."

Liverpool enjoy a comfortable cushion at the Premier League summit and could extend their lead above relegation-threatened Manchester United to a yawning 26 points with a victory on Sunday.
