Liverpool’s Women were in action as the precursor for the men’s first guard of honour at Stamford Bridge, with Amber Whiteley’s side looking to end the home campaign on a high, having lifted the curse of Anfield earlier in the season with a resounding victory over Manchester United.

Rounding of 2024/25 was a clash with Merseyside Derby rivals Everton, often a bogey side for The Reds and a chance to end a positive second half of the term in style in front of the home support.

Following the Friday announcement of a triple departure in the shape of Yana Daniëls, Jas Matthews and Teagan Micah, captain and stalwart of Liverpool since 2018, Niamh Fahey also announced that she would be hanging up her boots at the end of the current season, adding additional poignancy to this clash and a pre-match presentation for those involved.

The team itself saw the ever lively Olivia Smith joined by Sophie Roman Haug and Ceri Holland in the frontline, whilst Sam Kerr was in the heart of the midfield alongside Fuka Nagano and Marie Hobinger.

After a quiet opening few minutes, it was a mistake at the back that led to the first goal when Katja Snoeijs was found inside the area and able to run onto the pass and fire low into the bottom right-hand corner.

Whiteley’s side responded well to going a goal behind with a flurry of nearly moments inside the box before Smith fired over from the right-hand side of the area.

After a lull in proceedings, Liverpool were once again in the ascendancy before half time and captain Taylor Hinds took matters into her own hands in the quest for an equaliser with a long-range right-footed effort that was tipped onto the bar and behind for a corner.

Attendance: 15,376

The early stages of the second half saw Smith try her luck once again from range, this time a left-footed effort curling high and wide beyond the post, before she was just beaten to a loose ball inside the area by Everton’s keeper Courtney Brosnan.

Hobinger was the next to work the Blues’ stopper as another swift wave of Red attack so nearly led to what by this point would’ve been a well deserved equaliser.

Midway through the half, Cornelia Kapocs was introduced in place of Roman Haug, but disaster struck moments later as another rare foray into the Liverpool final third resulted in a second Everton goal, another very much against the run of play.

There was late optimism for Liverpool as Smith once again enticed more attention and with it a foul, committed by who picked up her second booking of the match and was duly dismissed, leaving the visitors down to 10 but with a two-goal cushion in the final 10 minutes.

However, Everton saw out the remainder of the time on the clock with minimal fuss and it was a disappointing defeat to close out the season at Anfield.
