Manchester United’s search for a new left wingback finally ended in January with the club pulling off a deal for Patrick Dorgu from Lecce.

The Dane should ideally head straight into the starting XI for the FA Cup tie against Leicester City in place of an ineffective Diogo Dalot.

The Portuguese was forced to play in that position due to Luke Shaw’s continued absence. Even Ruben Amorim had admitted that his compatriot was more suited to the opposite flank.

But Dorgu was not always the first choice for the role with the Red Devils trying very hard for Alphonso Davies of Bayern Munich.

Davies to stay at Bayern

The Canadian’s contract was ending next summer and United tried their best to persuade the five-time Bundesliga champion to leave Bavaria for Manchester.

Being a free agent would have suited INEOS given the financial concerns at the club. But they were having to contend with Real Madrid who were also sniffing around.

But now, putting all the rumours to bed, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that the 24-year-old will be staying at Munich and has signed a brand-new deal until 2030.

“Official, confirmed. Alphonso Davies signs new deal at Bayern until June 2030,” Romano wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Long United chase officially over

“I’m very happy that I’ve extended my contract with this great club. I came to FC Bayern when I was 18… now there’s much more to achieve together,” Davies said.

Davies would have been a perfect fit for the 20-time English league champions given his vast experience while he remains relatively young, something that fits the INEOS bill.

He has immense pace and would have added a lot of physicality, something that is currently lacking in United’s ranks, and his attacking statistics would have suited Amorim’s wingback system.

There is no point in thinking of what could have been. Hopefully, the left wing problems will be a thing of the past now that Dorgu has signed with the 20-year-old already showing tremendous potential during his time in Italy.
