With their place in the last 16 assured, Olympique Lyonnais will now await their next opponent in the UEFA Europa League.
A 1-1 draw with Ludogerets on matchday eight of the League phase enabled the French side to finish sixth in the table, giving them one of the eight automatic places in the round of 16.
That means that their soon-to-be new manager, Paolo Fonseca, can focus on the Ligue 1 campaign for the foreseeable future as the last 16 ties don’t occur until March 6 and 13.
We won’t know who they will face just yet, but there are four potential opponents they can prepare for in the next phase of the tournament.
Either Union Saint-Galloise, Steaua Bucharest, PAOL, or Ajax will face Lyon when the round of 16 ties take place in the spring.
OL went unbeaten in their last five Europa League fixtures to earn a direct place into the last 16.
In their last four Europa League appearances Lyon have made it to at least the round of 16, qualifying for the quarter-finals in two of those instances.
The Europa League’s knockout play-off draw occurrs on Friday, with the last 16 ones taking place on February 21.
