Chelsea beat Manchester United to the signing of Geovany Quenda and Fabrizio Romano has revealed the crucial factor which made the difference.

It was announced on Friday that Chelsea had completed a deal for the 17-year-old Sporting Lisbon star, with the Blues set to pay around £40m.

Quenda will spend next season on loan at Sporting before joining up with his new team-mates in the summer of 2026.

Why Quenda chose Chelsea over Man United

Quenda is regarded as one of the biggest talents in his age group, and it’s been reported the Blues moved quickly on a deal to fend off interest from Bayern Munich.

The teenager has already made 43 appearances in all competitions for Sporting this season, including ten in the Champions League.

It had been widely expected Quenda would reunite with his former boss Ruben Amorim at Old Trafford, with United heavily linked with the youngster.

However, Chelsea swooped in to get the deal done, and Romano has revealed the crucial factor that made Quenda pick the Blues over United.

“Sources close to Quenda tell us he’s willing to play as a winger, not a wing-back [like he would at Manchester United], and that’s what made the difference in conversation with Chelsea,” he wrote in his Give Me Sport Column.

Chelsea are said to view Quenda as a perfect player for the future, and along with Estevao Willian and Kendry Paez the Blues have three of the most exciting under-18 talents in world football.

Quenda could arrive at Chelsea with over 100 appearances at Sporting providing he stays injury free, and you would imagine he’ll go straight into the first team squad.

It looks like Chelsea could be back shopping at Sporting again and discussions are said to be ongoing over a deal for 20-year-old midfielder Dario Essugo.

Essugo is currently on loan at La Liga side Las Palmas and the Blues were linked with a move late in the January window.
