After an undefeated month of February saw his side move up to fifth place in the Bundesliga table, Mainz 05 head coach Bo Henriksen was his usual jovial self at Friday’s press conference. Mainz prepare to travel to RB Leipzig this weekend, and are currently ahead of the German Red Bulls on goal differential for the first Europa League qualifying spot.
Last week’s win against St. Pauli left the Rheinhessen dreaming of European football. One of Germany’s famed “carnival clubs” continue to thrive under their Danish gaffer; a lively personality easily classified as German football’s “clown prince”. Mainz’ self-proclaimed “goofball” now prepares to commemorate his first carnival since being tapped to lead the team.
Henriksen confirmed that he and the team would be back for carnival festivities in the city on this coming Monday and Tuesday. Irrespective of whether Mainz beat back their main rivals for an Europa League place, it shall be “party time” once the weekend is over.
“Of course I’ll be there with the players and we’ll enjoy it as a team,” Henriksen said when looking forward to ‘Rosenmontag’ (‘Carnival Monday’). “We’ll be celebrating the heritage of this city. This culture is a part of us and we love being a part of it.
“I have no idea,” Henriksen responded when asked what costume he planned on donning. “I think I am my own costume so I don’t need to devote much time to thinking how to dress up. The main point is that I will enjoy it.”
