Man City boss Pep Guardiola confirmed that Manuel Akanji will be out of action for at least two months after picking up an adductor injury.

The defender looked in discomfort in the first half of the Premier League champion’s 3-2 defeat to Real Madrid on Tuesday. He was replaced by Rico Lewis at the break.

Guardiola revealed that the Switzerland international will undergo surgery on Saturday, meaning he will be sidelined for 8-10 weeks.

Speaking ahead of Saturday’s meeting with Newcastle United, the Catalan tactician said: “His adductor is broken.

“We wish the best recovery for Manu because the effort he has done this season has been unbelievable.

“Him and Nathan [Ake] have played in difficult conditions, not being in top [shape], to help the team in the emergency we had with a lack of players we had in the centre-back position.

“In the end, the body said, ‘enough is enough’.”

Jack Grealish is a doubt to face Newcastle after the Man City winger was subbed off just 30 minutes into the Real game.

“Probably it’s not as tough as what Manu [Akanji] has done but I don’t know if he will be ready tomorrow. I don’t think so but we will assess in the next hours,” Guardiola said.

Nico Gonzalez could feature for Man City on Saturday after he was named on the bench in midweek. The midfielder sustained an injury in the first half of his debut against Leyton Orient last weekend.

“It’s not a difficult start, he was just injured,” Guardiola said. “A difficult start is when you play bad. That was not the case for the 20 minutes he played [against Leyton Orient].

“But of course it was a setback from when he arrived. He had a little pain. For Madrid, he was not fully fit. Day by day he is getting better. Like I said with Jack [Grealish], we will assess in the next few hours.”
