Manchester United welcomed Mason Mount back to training on Monday, five weeks after the midfielder suffered a head injury against Tottenham Hotspur.

Mount, who has struggled with various fitness issues since he joined the club from Chelsea in 2023, overcame a hamstring problem that had ruled him out of the first few weeks in September to return to the pitch as a substitute when Spurs visited Old Trafford.

But, having replaced Kobbie Mainoo due to injury, he ended up being forced off himself when an aerial collision with Spurs defender Radu Dragusin left him bleeding from a nasty cut to the head.

Mount has missed United's last seven games in all competitions as a result, which has left the squad light in midfield due to Mainoo also suffering a further issue against Aston Villa a week later.

The club has confirmed Mount "will not be rushed back" in action, but resuming full training with the rest of the squad is a significant step forward in his recovery. As a result, there is no direct indication of when the 25-year-old might be back on the pitch, but United only have games against PAOK and Leicester City to come before pausing for the November international break.

Mount's return to availability could coincide with Ruben Amorim starting work as the club's new head coach. The Portuguese has been appointed permanent successor to Erik ten Hag but is currently fulfilling remaining obligations with Sporting CP and will not take up his role in Manchester until next Monday. His first game will come after the international break on 24 November.

Ruud van Nistelrooy will remain in charge as interim boss until then. The Dutchman has already overseen a thumping victory over Leicester in the Carabao Cup and a Premier League draw with Chelsea in which a second half equaliser denied the Red Devils the victory.
