England forward’s Old Trafford position remains unclear as end of January window approaches fast
Ruben Amorim insists he is unsure if Marcus Rashford will be staying at Manchester United beyond the end of the current transfer window.
The England forward’s future has been arguably the most significant saga in the January market so far, having not played for United at all since December 12 amid an ongoing exile from the matchday squad and having last month gone public with his desire to seek a new challenge elsewhere.
What has followed has been daily speculation on Rashford’s potential next move, having apparently rejected a big-money switch to Saudi Arabia amid plenty of rival interest in a midseason loan deal from across Europe, most notably in Serie A from the likes of AC Milan, Napoli and Juventus.
Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund have also been mentioned as potential suitors, with some reporting that Rashford himself is hoping for a move to Barcelona.
United are rumoured to be unwilling to allow the 27-year-old to join a domestic rival, ruling out any unlikely deal with the likes of Chelsea, Tottenham, Arsenal or West Ham.
Rashford is said to have rejected a move to Milan earlier this week, with his future still very much uncertain with less than 10 days now remaining until the transfer window closes for business until the summer.
He was again omitted from Amorim’s squad for Thursday night’s dramatic last-gasp Europa League win over Rangers at Old Trafford, while some reports have suggested that the player is willing to stay at United.
The manager, meanwhile, says he genuinely does not know at this stage if Rashford will remain a United player by the end of the month.
"I don't know,” he said ahead of Sunday night’s trip to Fulham in the Premier League. ”I really don't know. Guys, it's eight days (until the end of the window). We will see in the end of the window what happened. And then we will talk about it in that moment."
Another player for whom the writing appears to be on the wall at United is Casemiro, who has played only a bit-part role under Amorim so far and remained an unused substitute against Rangers despite Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte both being rested as academy graduate Toby Collyer partnered Christian Eriksen in midfield.
Asked why Casemiro was not playing for United, Amorim said: “I have to choose the player with characteristics that I see the game. So it’s just that.
“I have to make some choices. I want to play a style of game that is sometimes different from other coaches.”
