Manchester United have intensified their pursuit of Felix Nmecha, catching Borussia Dortmund off guard with their sudden interest, according to reports.
The Red Devils are in need of reinforcements across multiple positions, but financial constraints imposed by the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) mean that new manager Ruben Amorim is unlikely to receive a hefty transfer budget. As a result, United are expected to prioritise attacking options and wide players, having already been linked to several strikers and wing-backs.
Despite having promising young midfielders such as Kobbie Mainoo, Manuel Ugarte, and Toby Collyer, United appear to be making an unexpected push for Nmecha.
German outlet Bild reports that United have “suddenly” emerged as contenders to sign the 24-year-old midfielder ahead of the summer transfer window. This unexpected development has reportedly unsettled Dortmund, who had no plans to offload Nmecha, a product of Manchester City’s academy.
Currently sitting 11th in the Bundesliga, Dortmund are unlikely to qualify for the Champions League through domestic league standings. This could prompt them to sell key players in the summer, though Nmecha was not initially considered a likely departure.
However, United’s interest now casts doubt over Dortmund’s plans, with the club reportedly concerned that Nmecha’s exit is becoming increasingly likely. According to Bild, United are prepared to pay €48 million (£40.1 million) to secure his services.
Despite his prior connection to City, Nmecha could be inclined to move if Dortmund’s struggles persist under Niko Kovaç. That said, concerns remain regarding his fitness, as he has been sidelined for nearly 200 days due to injuries since joining Dortmund in 2023. Given United’s more urgent squad needs, some scepticism remains over the validity of Bild’s claims.
As the summer transfer window approaches, it remains to be seen whether United will follow through on their interest in Nmecha or shift their focus to other priority areas. For now, Dortmund’s plans could be seriously disrupted if the Red Devils push ahead with their pursuit of the midfielder.
